Product Development Engineer (Full-Time)
Position Overview

Smithco designs and manufactures equipment used by professionals around the world. With 121 dealers across 62 countries, we are “big enough to matter, small enough to care.”
We are seeking a hands-on Product Development Engineer to support new product development, prototype fabrication, and continuous improvement of existing equipment. This role reports to the Senior Product Development Engineer and works closely with manufacturing, production, and marketing teams.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys both engineering design and shop-floor problem solving.
Core Responsibilities
-Support new product development initiatives from concept through production
-Assist in prototype fabrication, testing, and validation
-Interpret and create hydraulic and electrical schematics
-Develop and maintain engineering drawings and Build of Material (BOMs)
-Collaborate with production to improve manufacturability and reduce cost
-Assist in sourcing components for research and development projects
-Support troubleshooting and improvement of existing product lines
-Contribute to a culture of safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement
Required Skills & Experience
-Strong mechanical aptitude
-Working knowledge of hydraulics and ability to interpret hydraulic schematics
-Understanding of 12-volt electrical systems and wiring diagrams
-3–7 years of experience in mechanical engineering, automotive, small engine, or related technical field
-Basic welding and fabrication experience
-Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word
-Strong written and verbal communications skills
Preferred Skills & Experience
-Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience)
-CAD experience (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar)
-Experience with off-road, turf, agricultural, or specialty equipment
-Familiarity with gas or diesel-powered equipment
-Willingness to travel occasionally for testing or dealer support
Qualifications
-Engineering degree and/or 3–7 years of relevant technical experience
-Working knowledge of fabrication, hydraulics, and electrical systems
-Ability to develop and maintain Build of Material (BOMs)
-Strong organizational and project coordination skills
-Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
Compensation
FY26 Salary Range: $68,000 – $92,000 per year based on qualification.
Compensation is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
