Meet Your Salesperson: Steven Johnson

Today, we want you to meet Steven Johnson, one of our dedicated salespersons who brings a wealth of experience and a hands-on approach to our team.

Steven’s journey with Smithco began in 1994 when Ted Smith, the company’s founder, hired him. Starting as a painter, Steven quickly immersed himself in various roles within the company. He learned to weld, and eventually managed the welding department. His curiosity and dedication led him to work in research and development during his off-hours, where his knack for building and designing shone through.

In 2000, Steven transitioned into a sales role, thanks to the encouragement of Don and Bill. His extensive hands-on experience with the equipment made this move a natural fit. Steven’s deep understanding of the products and the needs of the customers set him apart. He wasn’t just selling equipment; he was providing solutions. His ability to identify issues in the field and bring back actionable feedback to improve products became a significant asset for Smithco.

One of Steven’s standout experiences was with the County of Los Angeles. The county faced challenges with overgrown ball fields and decided to invest in new equipment. Steven evaluated 27 facilities, made recommendations, and conducted training sessions for their staff. His approach was practical and cost-effective, focusing on the county’s actual needs rather than pushing for the most expensive options. This project is a testament to Steven’s commitment to solving problems and delivering value.

Building rapport with customers is one of Steven’s strengths. He believes in the importance of face-to-face interactions and spending quality time with clients. Steven knows when to reach out and when to give space, understanding the personal and professional lives of his customers. This personal touch has earned him the trust and respect of many.

Outside of work, Steven enjoys boating, working on classic cars, and tackling hands-on projects. He recently completed building his garage, doing all the electrical and finishing work himself. For Steven, these activities are a way to decompress and engage in something different from his daily routine.

Steven has been married to Jennifer since 2000, and they have two children, Kayla and Colton. Jennifer also works for Smithco, starting in 1996. Their shared professional life brings a unique dynamic to their relationship. They know the demands of the job and support each other in balancing work and family. Together, they enjoy spending time with friends and attending sports events, making the most of their shared interests and connections.

At Smithco, we are proud to have Steven Johnson as part of our team. His journey from painter to salesperson, his dedication to solving problems, and his commitment to building strong customer relationships make him an invaluable asset. Whether you need advice on equipment or a practical solution to a field problem, Steven is here to help.
